Yesterday afternoon, the 12th annual BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology came to a close at the Palais des congrès de Montréal (Montreal Convention Center). This event is the world’s largest international industrial biotech event, and this year more than 1,200 industry leaders representing 725 companies came and joined us at this event. We also had attendees from 50 different countries and 37 different states as well as Washington D.C. The attention this event received truly highlights the broad support for this industry. During this 2015 meeting, we hosted more than 1,400 partnering meetings, which is equivalent to a 40% increase from last year’s event and a record from previous World Congress events.

“From our robust plenary sessions, to the record number of partnering meetings, the 2015 World Congress was a resounding success. This event continues to provide leaders with the opportunity to showcase the best of the industrial biotech industry and form connections and partnerships that will drive growth in the sector for years to come,” said Brent Erickson, Executive VP, Industrial & Environmental Section at BIO.

Eight individual tracks of educational programing drew in about 300 speakers, and BIO World Congress also offered 48 unique sessions highlighting Renewable Chemicals and Biobased Materials, Specialty Chemicals, Feedstocks, Food & Nutritional Ingredients, Synthetic Biology and Advanced Biofuels and Biorefinery Platforms. Also, this year we had 50 exhibitors at the BIO Exhibition and sold over 7,000 square feet!

World Congress also hosted new, unique programs this year, such as the “Renewable Chemistry Start-Up Award” held by Sofinnova Partners at the CleanTech Investor Sessions; Sofinnova named Glucan Biorenewables as the winner! We also presented the annual George Washington Carver Award as well as the Rosalind Franklin Award to Jonathan S. Wolfson, CEO of Solozyme, and Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of Lanza Tech, respectively.

“What is possible, is far more than what people think,” said Wolfson as he received his award.

Also at the Plenary Sessions this year, we were honored to have such a dynamic group of speakers, from the Governor of Iowa Terry Branstad to Marcos Vinicius de Souza, Secretary of Innovation, Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade of Brazil, to Andrew Hagan, Director of Chemistry and Advanced Materials Industries & Head, The Global Agenda Council on Emerging Technologies at the World Economic Forum.

“This year’s BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology brought together leaders and executives in industry, investment firms, government and academia from across the globe to pursue industrial biotechnology’s potential to create a bioeconomy,” said Brent Erickson
